James Gray: Front view of 7A Rock Place in 1913, a private house. jgc_22_078

James Gray: Rear view of 7A Rock Place in 1913. Note the extremely tiny back area between the rear window and the flint wall. In the foreground is the garden of a house in New Steine. Soon afterwards the premises reverted to business use and were used in the metal trade until 1939. They have since been completely reconstructed. jgc_22_079

2018: Front view of west side of Rock Place, now redeveloped and currently the BIMM (British & Irish Modern Music Institute) East building. The roof to the right suggests some features have survived from the 1913 picture, although substantially altered. (Photographer: Jayne Paulin)

James Gray: This is a copy of a very old, faded and damaged photograph, which accounts for its poor reproduction. It shows the forge and living quarters of J. Goble, Shoeing Smith, period about 1900. This is a very old street, of the same age as New Steine, and at first consisted of stables and coachmen’s rooms. Until about 1860 it was named Rock Mews. The particular premises were for many years used by a coachbuilder until Mr Goble took possession in 1897. jgc_22_080

2018: Street directories (eg 1905) show John Goble, shoeing smith located at 7A Rock Place. Now demolished and replaced by BIMM (British & Irish Modern Music Institute) East building. (Photographer: Jayne Paulin)
