James Gray: View of the lane leading to the old mansion, Woodland Grange, from Ovingdean Road, in February 1959. At this time the bungalows of Ovingdean Close, as this lane was later called, were being built. Woodland Grange was demolished a few years later. jgc_33_041

2020: Woodingdean (or Woodendean) House as it was originally called was a large Georgian mansion situated in what is now Ovingdean Close and was probably built around 1830.

Between 1939 and 1945, the house was owned by T H Sargeant (better known as the comedian Max Miller ‘The ‘Cheeky Chappie’) who changed the name to Woodland Grange. After Miller left, the house was owned by a Mr Vanderborght who died in 1962, having sold part of his grounds for a housing development. In 1965 his executors sold the rest of the land and the building was demolished. Ovingdean Close and the houses nearby on Ovingdean Road were built between 1958 and 1966. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)
