James Gray: The derelict condition of the long back garden of  No 38 Osmond Road, 2 March 1958. Several small blocks of flats have since been built here fronting Davigdor Road. jgc_11_145

2018: A block of flats, Richmond Court (BN3 1TD), now stands here fronting onto Osmond Road. Two further blocks, Warwick Court and Derby Court, front onto Davigdor Road. (Photographer: Alison Minns)

James Gray: Two photographs [jgc_11_106 and jgc_11_107] of buildings which once formed part of this laundry, though when they were taken on 10 February 1974, the buildings were listed as in Osmond Road, at the corner of Nizells Avenue, see photo. Wick laundry started as a commercial undertaking in the 1900s, but one wonders whether its origin was as a laundry of the Wick Estate, which included what is now St Anns Well Gardens. Support for this is provided by the firm’s advertisement in the Brighton Directory. The buildings were removed in 1989, and the inevitable flats have replaced them. This photograph shows the frontage in Nizells Avenue. Additional Information: Southern Vineyards. jgc_11_106

2018: The original Wick Laundry was started in the 1830s and on this site by the early 20th century. It employed 76 people in 1907. The buildings were demolished in 1989 and the site is now occupied by The Vineries – a sheltered home complex. This site is on the corner of Nizells Avenue and York Avenue and extends some distance down York Avenue. This is the view of the front taken from opposite, in Osmond Gardens (formerly the southern extension of Osmond Road).  (Photographer: Dave Lane)
