NORFOLK ROAD METHODIST CHURCH

Norfolk Road

Neighbourhood:
Western Road area
1964
2018

James Gray: Built in 1868, this church was at one time a great power in Brighton Methodism. It was the home of the Brighton Boys’ Brigade and was where the Dome Mission started in 1909. By 1964, however, the congregation had dwindled and the final service was held on 31 August, after which the church was closed. Photographed 6 September 1964. The church was demolished early in 1965 and flats are to be built on the cleared site. jgc_26_181

2018:  After the Norfolk Road Methodist Church, seen in  the James Gray image, was demolished in 1965, it was replaced by this block of flats, called Braemar House. The Dome Mission moved in 1924 to the Dorset Gardens Methodist Church where it stayed until it finally closed in the 1990s. (Photographer: Tony Bailey)
