Nevill Road (Rottingdean)

Neighbourhood:
Rottingdean, Ovingdean and Saltdean
Unknown

Text is being prepared or edited for this entry. It will be available soon.

James Gray: A drawing of Rottingdean Mill, of the “hooded” variety, it was erected in 1802. jgc_32_013

2018: The Mill no longer has its fantail, and was listed Grade II in 1952. The Mill ceased operational use in the 1880s, and has needed considerable repair and upkeep – its protection now rests with the Rottingdean Preservation Society.

The original painting shows the sails facing east, and the view looks south- east across Rottingdean to the coast, with the road to Saltdean in the distance.  The current picture has the sails facing west which would be more usual, facing the prevailing winds. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

James Gray: Photographs of both ends [see also jgc_32_117 on the High Street (Rottingdean) (2) page] of this street. Period uncertain, but obviously before 1914. jgc_32_116

2018: This is a view from the High Street looking west up Neville Road. On the right-hand side of the image is the Reading Room of 1885-86, now Rottingdean Club. On the left of the original photograph is the long-vanished National Mixed School of 1860, now replaced by a modern Post Office. The gap between the Club and the housing further up the hill has been infilled with a small parade of shops and cafés. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)
