PORTLAND ROAD AREA

Mortimer Road

James Gray: Two photographs of 1917, taken in Mortimer Road. This view looks to the east. The Mayor of Hove is speaking to local people about the war effort, possibly appealing to them to buy war Savings Certificates.  jgc_16_014

2018: The south side of Mortimer Road has hardly changed. (Photographer: Mark Stephenson)

James Gray:  See caption for jgc_16_014 above. This view looks to the west. jgc_16_015

2018: Housing has replaced the factory. Ruskin Place is now closed to motor vehicles. (Photographer: Mark Stephenson)

1933
2019

James Gray: The Sentinel Railbus, supplied by the Sentinel Wagon Works of Shrewsbury, seen in 1933 at Aldrington Halt (formerly Dyke Junction Halt). It continued in service on the Dyke railway until 1st May 1935.  jgc_37_140

2019: A concrete platform has replaced the wooden one. The ticket office has been demolished and the station has a utilitarian feel with security fencing. Behind the station, the chimney of the incinerator has gone and now the council tries to recycle as much waste as possible. Aldrington Halt no longer boasts it fine large sign but passenger access to Aldrington Station is still via Mortimer Road from the south and Amherst Crescent to the north. (Photographer: Mark Stephenson)
