ROOF TOP VIEW OF CLIFTON ROAD CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH

Montpelier Crescent

Neighbourhood:
Seven Dials
1931
2020

James Gray: This rather unusual view of the church dates from 1931 and may have been taken from the rear of one of the Montpelier Crescent houses. There is a glimpse of the Dyke Road and of houses in Compton Avenue. Beyond the two chimneys, the tall houses are in Albert Road. jgc_26_170

2020: The James Gray picture is of a publicly inaccessible view, taken from an upper window at the back of one of the last houses in Montpelier Crescent, at the Seven Dials end.

The modern Google view allows us to establish  that Homelees House, (circled in red) on the corner of Dyke Road and Clifton Road now stands on the site of  the tower of the Clifton Congregational Church, central in the 1931 image but demolished in 1972. The old map clarifies the point of view. If a picture could be taken from the original vantage point now, tall trees would obscure much or all of the view. (Photographer: Google)
