EAST HOVE

Montefiore Road

Neighbourhood:
Goldsmid
1923
2018

James Gray: The corner of Montefiore Road and Lyndhurst Road in 1923. At this period there were only a few houses in Montefiore Road though the areas to the east and west were fairly built up. To the left are 1 and 3, Lyndhurst Road and behind, houses on both sides of Avondale Road. By 1928 most of these vacant plots had been built on. jgc_11_123

2018: The white wooden fence around No 1 Lyndhurst Road (the house with the large white wall) has now gone and the first floor balcony now only extends across half of the width of the house. A new pair of semi-detached houses Nos 10 and 12 Montefiore Road was erected on the vacant plot as well as other houses going north up Montefiore Road. The houses in Avondale Road are no longer visible. (Photographer: Alison Minns)

James Gray: Hannington’s Depository at the junction of Davigdor Road and the very rural Montefiore Road, in 1906. Additional Information: Converted to offices by Legal & General Assurance Co. in the 1970s, and relinquished by them in 2008 following a move to new offices at Hove Park. jgc_17_011

2018: This impressive building is now The Montefiore Hospital, a private hospital operated by Spire Healthcare.

It was sold in 1972 to the Legal & General Assurance Society, who renovated, converted and extended it for use as offices. Then it stood empty for six years after the Society moved to the newly built City Park, next to Hove Park, in 2006. Following further conversion work it became a hospital in 2012. James Gray: Old Shoreham Road at the top of Montefiore Road, looking west, 1907. Although this photograph is blurred, the Methodist Church can be seen on the left. This was built in 1904 and there were then no buildings between the church and the spur railway line. jgc_17_012

2018: Early in the twentieth century, houses were added between Avondale Road (on the west side of the old church) and the railway line. In 2018 the former United Methodist Church is occupied by the Grace Eyre Foundation (address 36 Montefiore Road) which supports people with learning disabilities. Note the cycle lanes on each side of the road, and the resulting restriction of road width. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)
