Midhurst Rise

Patcham
c 1948
2018

James Gray: Looking down Portfield Avenue to the newly built, and still building, Hollingbury Council Estate. This is the first post-war large scale building scheme undertaken by Brighton Council and it occupied about two years in its construction. At the left, between the two houses, can be seen the new Carden School. The year of the photograph would be 1948 or 1949. Additional Information: This is, in fact, a view down Midhurst Rise. jgc_20_166

2018: The Additional Information for the original image is correct in that the view is down Midhurst Rise, not Portfield Avenue. The shops at the bottom of the road are now obscured by trees. Not all the saplings lining the road have survived, possibly as a result of the great storm in 1987. (Photographer: Jane Jordan)
