MANCHESTER STREET

Manchester Street

Neighbourhood:
Kemptown

James Gray: This small street, leading from Marine Parade to St James’s Street, has in recent years been given over almost exclusively to business use. Built early in the nineteenth century it contained houses with very fine doorways, used as guest or lodging houses. Nos 2 to 4 on the west side, seen here, had for many years been the offices of Southdown Motor Services. They were empty when photographed on 9 February 1975. Demolished in 1982, and a block of flats is being built on the site in 1983. jgc_22_086

2018: Manchester Street from Marine Parade: the Marine Parade buildings are largely unchanged but the west side of Manchester Street (in the middle distance) has been mostly demolished and replaced. (Photographer: Jayne Paulin)

2018: West side of Manchester Street: Nos 2-4 have been demolished and redeveloped, although one of Gray’s ‘very fine doorways’ has been preserved in the new structure. The car park Gray used as his vantage point remains undeveloped and still in use as a car park, although private and gated. (Photographer: Jayne Paulin)
