James Gray: Photograph taken on 1st August 1965. This trim little row of houses still in reasonable habitable condition, has now to be sacrificed to provide a car park for the shoppers in Blatchington Road. jgc_14_155

2018: The northern side of the road now has only three houses left, flanked by a Co-Op supermarket at the eastern end and an Iceland store at the western end.

The entire southern side has been swallowed up by the campus of St Andrews School. (Photographer: Ivor O’Mahony)

James Gray: Three little streets, Haddington, Malvern and Monmouth, had the misfortune to be built adjacent to Blatchington Road. Although at the date of these photographs, 1st August 1965, they were nearly 100 years old, they were still in reasonable condition. They were built in 1873. By 1968 many of the houses had been demolished as the area is to be made a car park for the Blatchington Road shopping district. This view is of Monmouth Street. jgc_14_157

2018: Monmouth Street has been completely demolished on the south side, and absorbed by enlargement of the campus of St Andrew’s School which lies directly below it. The two photos show the west and eastern ends of where Monmouth Street used to be: the car park is the eastern end. The houses facing the far end of Monmouth Street are in Belfast Street.
