LANSDOWNE STREET

Lansdowne Street

Neighbourhood:
Brunswick
1962
2018

James Gray: A derelict house, No 2 on the east side of this street, photographed on 7 October 1962. This house was last lived in about 1950 and soon afterwards it was shored up by these massive timber baulks. For some reason it remained like this for 20 years as it was not until June 1971 that the old house was demolished. The site is now being redeveloped together with adjoining shops in Western Road. Lansdowne Street was started in the late 1850s, but only on the west side. These are the houses with small front gardens. The east side houses were built in the 1800s. jgc_11_066

2018: The  house was replaced with the present building which was initially used as an office block called Enterprise House and subsequently converted into flats. Its address is now listed as 83a Western Road because it is part of 83 Western Road, the retail premises on the corner of Western Road and Lansdowne Street. (Photographer: Helen Glass)
