SUN STREET

Kingswood Street

Neighbourhood:
Carlton Hill
1928
2019

James Gray: Probably the worst, and certainly the largest, of the slum areas was in that district between Edward Street and Richmond Street, usually referred to as the Carlton Hill area. Narrow streets and courts almost back to back ran at right angles from the steeply climbing Carlton Hill and Sussex Street. Mostly built between 1810 and 1850 they had long exceeded their useful life and were responsible for the jibe that Brighton was the town with ‘the Queen Anne front and Mary Ann back.’ In 1933 Brighton Corporation embarked upon an extensive scheme to clear these slums and on this and succeeding pages are to be seen many of the streets which were completely swept away. Despite its name this narrow slum street saw very little of the sun. Perhaps an unconscious humourist named it thus. The view here is from Carlton Hill to Edward Street. Demolished 1933. jgc_24_049

2019: Sun Street ran from Carlton Hill to Edward Street before being demolished in 1933. The lower part of Carlton Hill was renamed Kingswood Street after the Kingswood Flats built in this area in 1938. This view looks directly at the wall of University of Brighton Grand Parade building which now covers nearly half the area between Kingswood Street and Edward Street, including the part which was once Sun Street. (Photographer: Ruthie Martin)
