Bedford Hotel, Kings Road

King's Road (1B)

King’s Road: Holiday Inn

Neighbourhood:
Brighton West seafront
1870s
c1950

James Gray: An 1870s photograph of the Bedford Hotel not calling for any special comment. jgc_01_046

James Gray: The Bedford Hotel, thought to be about 1950. Car enthusiasts please forgive if incorrect! jgc_01_049

1870
2018

James Gray: This photograph and the next one of the Hotel [jgc_01_096 and 097] have just a year or two dividing them. The only difference is that in the next view the cross-struts have been added to the railings and this was done about 1870. jgc_01_096

2018: Of this 17-storey 1967 block, five floors are run as the Holiday Inn Hotel and remaining floors are private apartments. To the right (east) an early 19th century building facing both King’s Road and Preston Street (now the West Beach Hotel) has survived.

It has been painted and three of the bricked-up windows have been opened, but the chimney stacks and other windows are recognisable. Rising behind the West Beach Hotel is, firstly, Astra House on the far (east) side of Preston Street and beyond that, way over in St Margaret’s Place, Sussex Heights looms large. (Photographer: Suzanne Hinton)

James Gray: This photograph and the previous one of the Hotel [jgc_01_096] have just a year or two dividing them. The only difference is that in the previous view the cross-struts have not been added to the railings and this was done about 1870. jgc_01_097

James Gray: Another photograph of this elegant building, in Victorian times. From the dress of the people seen, the carriages and the railings and gas lamp, the period would seem to be in the 1880s. Additional Information: ©Philippe Garner. jgc_01_108

James Gray: Not a clue as to the year from which this photograph dates, but my guess is that this dates from about 1875. jgc_01_098

James Gray: Not a clue as to the year from which this photograph dates, but my guess is that the period of this view is about 1865–1872. jgc_01_099

1868-70

James Gray: Not a clue as to the year from which this photograph dates, but my guess is that the period of this view is about 1865–1872. jgc_01_100

James Gray: There is a slight difference between this photograph and the next, and the subsequent one [jgc_01_101, 102 & 103]. Note that in this one and the next, the kerbside railings are without any cross-struts, but they are seen in jgc_01_103. Probably the earlier photographs are of the period 1868-1870, and the later one about 1872. More dirty roadway and empty pavements. jgc_01_101

James Gray: There is a slight difference between this photograph and the previous two. Note that in this one the kerbside railings are with cross-struts, but they are not seen in jgc_01_101 and 102. Probably the earlier photographs are of the period 1868-1870, and this later one about 1872. More dirty roadway and empty pavements. jgc_01_103

James Gray: Note the recently built promenade wall and compare it with the gravel bank in the 1866 photograph (and especially photographs jgc_01_057 on the King’s Road (1) page and jgc_01_058 on the Brighton East Seafront: images on the beach (1) page). Beach then extended to the foot of this wall. The building on the extreme right was rebuilt in 1876 as the New Club. The present line of arches under the promenade were not constructed until 1892. Additional Information: Beach; boats. jgc_01_104
