IVY PLACE

Ivy Place

Neighbourhood:
Brunswick, Western Road area
1954
2018

James Gray: A peaceful backwater, which turns out of the east side of Waterloo Street, it contains only five houses three of which visible from the street. Nos. 4 and 5, shown in the next photograph are hidden from view around the corner. The houses must present almost the same appearance as when they were built, in the 1850s. It is difficult to say why they are so named, as there is no trace of any ivy nowadays. Photographed 20 June 1954.  Additional Information: Hammond’s Garage. jgc_11_005

2018: Ivy Place itself is now entirely residential. The slatted entrance on the south-east corner (right in the image) leads to Cavendish Mews, a terrace of five houses. The former garage forecourt at the the north end of the road is now a parking area for Ivy Mews, a development of 8 terraced houses. The parking area is behind the wall in the centre of this picture, which is appropriately covered by a substantial ivy. (Photographer: Annie Drynan)
