IVORY PLACE

Ivory Place

Neighbourhood:
Carlton Hill
1955
2018

James Gray: In this view of 1955 can be seen the buildings which replaced these slum houses. All the other houses seen in this photograph were swept away under further clearance schemes in 1963-1965. jgc_27_018

2018: The buildings on the left (west) of the picture are hardly changed from the original image but those on the right have all been demolished and the site occupied by a car park for the blocks of flats on Ashton Rise.

There are also developments of four-storey blocks of flats visible at the far end of Ivory Place (actually on Richmond Parade). (Photographer: Kevin Wilsher)

James Gray: Northwards to Richmond Street during the late 1930s, actual year unknown. jgc_27_019

James Gray: This photograph was taken two years later [than jgc_27_038], in December 1958. It shows the houses at the Sussex Street end, on the east side. They were cleared away in 1959 and the site is now an official car park. The passage between two houses at one time led to Ivory Buildings seen on another page [jgc_27_016].  jgc_27_039

James Gray: These houses, Nos 33-37, were probably the earliest to be built in Ivory Place as they were graced with fairly long front gardens. Photographed on 21 November 1956, they are still standing, boarded up and ready for demolition – February 1960.

Although slum houses on the west side were cleared in the 1930s, the east side was left as it was for many years afterwards. Not until the 1950s did Brighton Corporation decide on the further clearance, complementary to the Richmond Street – Albion Hill redevelopment scheme. jgc_27_038

2018: The top third of Ivory Place (northwards towards Richmond Parade) remains undeveloped and is today little more than an alleyway between the backs of blocks of flats. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

James Gray: Looking in the same direction as the previous photograph [jgc_27_019] but at the backs of the ancient cottages on the west side, 7 February 1935. On the left, some commercial buildings approached from Sussex Place. jgc_27_020

James Gray: Photographs [see also jgc_26_025 on the Morley Street page] of Sussex Street School on 29 April 1962, not long before they were demolished as part of the Albion Hill redevelopment. These old town schools were built in 1872 soon after the establishment of the Brighton School Board and lasted for 90 years. By their obvious similarities they seem to have been the work of the same architect. jgc_27_026

2018: Sussex Street School was one part of the Richmond Street/Sussex Street schools complex which ran along Claremont Row between the two streets. The site of the school is now occupied by the Tarner Children’s Centre, obscured by the trees. As can be seen, there has been a great deal of development in Brighton since 1962. James Gray: The panoramic view shows the old houses of Albion Street and Ivory Place and the full length of Trafalgar Street. jgc_27_093

2018: The original photograph appears to have been taken from the top of one of the recently erected tower blocks. This view is looking across in the same direction – but at ground level is totally obscured by the modern housing. (Photographer: Ron Fitton, Additional image from Google)

James Gray: 2nd of 4 photographs [see also jgc_27_086 (on Richmond Parade page), 088 (Grove Hill) and 089 (Albion Hill)] taken in 1960 as this vast area was being cleared so that several blocks of high rise flats could replace the many worn out mean streets in this area. Some of these Ivory Place buildings, looking up to the southern façade of Richmond Street School, which was removed in 1962. jgc_27_087

2018: The modern southern entrance to Ivory Place, showing where the southern end of Richmond Street School stood before demolition in the 1960s. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)
