CLIFTONVILLE

Hova Villas

Neighbourhood:
Central Hove

James Gray: Three of the original six streets of Cliftonville, taken in 1905, when they were about 50 years old. Two of them, Hova and Ventnor Villas, were probably different from this when they were built in the 1850s, except for the trees. jgc_13_138

2018: The streets are largely unchanged although the trees have gone and traffic is now one-way only – south, towards the camera.

This early image of Hova Villas can be distinguished from nearby Ventnor Villas as Hova Villas houses have two storeys and the grander Ventnor Villas have three. (Photographer: David Sears)

James Gray: Procession headed down Hova Villas, and about to turn into Church Road. jgc_14_070

2018: James Gray marked his 1910 photograph “Hove Hospital Parade”  and it was taken on 21 August, the date of the enormously popular annual parade of Friendly and Trade Societies, brass bands, boy scouts and scores of other local groups to raise funds for medical charities.

The Mayor and Aldermen led the march and a small army of bucket rattlers expected the crowds to give generously.  That year it all ended with a service at All Saints church. A banner from the United Builders’ Labourers Union can be seen on the right. This 2018 view of Hova Villas, seen from the south, is easily recognisable as the same street. On the right is the side of the Church Road branch of the HSBC Bank, formerly the Midland Bank. (Photographer: Jane Southern)
