GREAT COLLEGE STREET

Great College Street

Neighbourhood:
Kemptown
c1914
2018

James Gray: Looking westwards from Abbey Road to College Place. Again a photograph of around the First World War period. This compact short street is much older than probably most people realise. Building commenced at the west end in the late 1850s and the street was almost completed by 1868. The outstanding building was that on the extreme right below. This was Fair Lee Villa owned and occupied by Councillor Henry Abbey. jgc_22_023

2018: Remarkably little has changed, except that the awning on the house on the right foreground has gone. (Photographer: Guy Shanley)
