TELSCOMBE VILLAGE

Gorham's Lane, Telscombe

Neighbourhood:
Rottingdean, Ovingdean and Saltdean
pre 1914-1918
2021

James Gray: Four photographs [jgc_32_203, 204, 205 and 206] of this unspoilt village, two dating from before 1914 and two later. I know nothing about the history of Telscombe, so sensibly I will say nothing more. jgc_32_203

2021: St Lawrence Church, now without ivy, and a view across the downs to the east. (Photographer: Mary McKean)

James Gray: See caption for jgc_32_203 above. jgc_32_204

2021: The view looking down Gorham’s Lane from beside the church. Many of the buildings are easily recognisable. (Photographer: Mary McKean)

James Gray: See jgc_32_203 above.  jgc_32_205

2021: St Lawrence Church dates from the 12th century though much was reconstructed in the 19th. The ivy is gone from the walls and the trees are considerably taller but otherwise much remains the same. (Photographer: Mary McKean)

James Gray: See jgc_32_203 above.  jgc_32_206

2021: The viewpoint is slightly to the west of the original image because trees now obscure the view down the road. The village remains unspoilt, nestling between hills in the South Downs National Park. (Photographer: Mary McKean)
