LEWES ROAD

Gladstone Place

Neighbourhood:
Bear Road area

1890s
2018

James Gray: This photograph was taken from a few yards up Gladstone Place, facing north. jgc_28_031

2018: Trade directories suggest that the first bit of the northern side of Gladstone Place was part of Bennett’s stonemasons located on the Lewes Road. This in turn became part of a petrol station and various other enterprises before being demolished to make way for student housing (Stoneworks) in 2016. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

1950s
2018

James Gray: There is little for me to say about this photograph. The year is unknown, but the appearance of the cars suggests the late 1950s. The houses, then some 75 years old, having been built from 1876 onwards, are still unchanged, but part of the Railway Viaduct crossing Lewes Road has since been removed. jgc_28_083

2018: The building on the bottom left of Gladstone Place was a garage and is now a branch of Kwik Fit. Even earlier it was the southern part of Bennett’s Stonemasons (see jgc_28_030). The background is noticeable for the absence of the Lewes Road viaduct and its replacement with the Sainsbury’s store. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)
