James Gray: Derelict buildings in Eastern Road, looking east from Freshfield Road, on 5 April 1981. Demolition was proposed so that the cleared area could be added to the Freshfield Industrial Estate, and this process was started in late 1985. jgc_22_201

2019: A view north-east from the junction of Eastern Road and Upper Bedford Street. The buildings backed on to Coalbrook Road – see Upper Bedford Street area page for historic information. (Photographer: Jayne Paulin)

James Gray: These two houses, which faced south at right angles to the road were built about 1870 and were first known as 5 and 6 Park Road East. For many years laundresses, the laundries adjoining the houses, occupied them. Soon after the date of the photograph, 4 June 1961, the houses were demolished and the huge Southdown offices are now here. jgc_22_122

2019: Gray’s 1961 photograph caught these Victorian houses shortly before their demolition. Since then there have been two generations of buildings. The Southdown Bus Company’s depot and offices have come and gone to be replaced by a new residential street (entrance on the far left of the updated image) that in its name retains an echo of its immediate past: Southdown Mews.
