James Gray: This view is from the terrace of the house [Fircroft] and is looking west over the unkempt lawn to the high trees flanking London Road. In other words, this is the front garden. Date of all photographs 10 November 1969. jgc_34_052

2020: Nothing remains of Fircroft house; it has all been built over with an estate of modern houses with the entrance via Varndean Drive (off Varndean Road). This photo was taken from approximately where the original was taken. Facing south towards London Road. (Photographer: Michael Doodson)

James Gray: A photograph of the house itself, sadly in a state of extreme decay with windows broken, roof stripped of tiles and lead and damaged masonry. This is the aspect from the overgrown front garden showing the front of the house, which faced west. To the right can be seen the pillared portico over the entrance to the house. jgc_34_053

2020: See caption for jgc_34_052 above. Facing east away from London Road. (Photographer: Michael Doodson)
