DORSET STREET

Dorset Street

Neighbourhood:
Kemptown
1979
2018

James Gray: At the time of these photographs – 10 June 1979 – little remained of the original street, and what there was, was under threat of early demolition. This was a very old street, dating from the early years of last century, about 1810. As late as the 1920s about ten houses were in occupation, but these were condemned as unfit for human living during the 1930s, and taken over for business use. All now demolished. This is the view from Edward Street looking south. jgc_22_055

2018: The scene has changed substantially, with flats built on the corner with Edward Street on the west side of the street (right-hand side of the picture). On the east side, up the hill, the corner building has been demolished and replaced. The road has been widened, probably around 1987, to enable Dorset Street to take on its current role as the entrance road to the car park of the Morrisons supermarket on St James’s Street. 2019: The original houses in Dorset Street have now gone and beyond the buildings at the Edward Street end of the road lies the car park of the Morrisons supermarket in St James’s Street. (Photographer: Jayne Paulin)
