James Gray: The Matron, staff and some of the patients grouped outside Hove Sanatorium, Foredown Road, about 1913. This is now called Foredown Hospital, principally used for infectious diseases. I do not know when it was built but it existed as far back as 1901. jgc_38_020

2020: The hospital, operational in the 1880s, was closed in the 1980s and largely demolished by 1988.

A housing estate now stands on the site although the hospital’s water tower remains and is visible on the left in the 2020 image. Known as the Foredown Water Tower, it houses the largest operational camera obscura in the south-east of England. (Photographer: Kevin Wilsher)
