COMPTON AVENUE

Compton Avenue

Neighbourhood:
Seven Dials

James Gray: The only clue to the period of this photograph is the gap in the buildings, where the present No. 37 was built in 1904. The scaffolding suggests that house adjoining Dyke Road were then being built, but I think this is unlikely. jgc_26_207

2018: Save for the introduction of cars and vans, the street appears much as it did in the James Gray image. The gap in the buildings referred to by James Gray is now filled with a brick built dwelling. (Photographer: Tony Bailey)

James Gray: Six photographs [jgc_31_008 to jgc_31_013] taken by the amateur photographer during 1957, showing the Church, the Church Hall and scenes of the interior when demolition was proceeding. Exterior view. jgc_31_009

2018: All Saints church on the left of the 1957 photograph was demolished in 1957 and replaced by Buckingham Lodge flats. The church hall, however, remains substantially unchanged and is the home of the West Hill Community Association. Se also caption for jgc_31_007. (Photographer: Frances Lindsay-Hills)
