James Gray: I had a job to identify this photograph when it came into my possession, as there was merely the name of the shopkeeper and the W on the adjoining fascia board as clues. It turned out to be the greengrocer’s shop of J Baker, at 11 College Place, adjoining the Wellington Hotel at No 12 & 13. Period unknown, but as a guess about 1913. This was a greengrocer’s shop from the 1860s until 1954. jgc_22_013
2019: The buildings along the west side of the street appear to be the same as those in Gray’s image. However, most of the upper windows and street fronts have been altered. What was the Wellington Hotel at No 12 is now the Ginger Dog restaurant. (Photographer: Kate Ormond)
James Gray: After the buildings of the Junior School of Brighton College, in Eastern Road, had been demolished a large area of wasteland (formerly gardens) was left at the rear. Adjoining the empty site was this large house, Clarendon Lodge, built at right angles to the other houses in Clarendon Place and facing College Place. With little clearance at the back it had a substantial front garden. For several years there was controversy about what should be done with this valuable town site; should it be left as an open space or built on. Housing for the elderly is being built now, 1983. Photograph taken 9 February 1975. Additional Information: Flint walls. jgc_23_017
