CLIFTON TERRACE

Clifton Terrace

Neighbourhood:
Montpelier and Clifton Hill
late 1920s
2018

James Gray: Built about 1850, and retaining something of the Regency elegance which had preceded it, this terrace seems strangely seldom to have been photographed. Here, at any rate, are three views (jgc_26_210, 211 and 212) at differing periods. This view looks east and shows the private gardens. The period is said to have been the late 1920s. jgc_26_210

2018: The terrace is largely unchanged though any remaining elegance is marred by parked cars and vans and the unsightly communal rubbish bin. The private gardens are unusual in that they are still private, for the enjoyment of the residents of Clifton Terrace. (Photographer: Helen Glass)

1950s
2018

James Gray: A similar view to previous (jgc_26_210), but about 25 years later, early in the 1950s, before the roadway became a glorified car park. By then electric light standards had replaced the gas-lamps. jgc_26_211

2018: See caption for jgc_26_210. (Photographer: Helen Glass)

1911
2018

James Gray: The visit of Princess Henry of Battenburg to Brighton. jgc_26_212

2018: Many more houses now have large dormer windows along the roof-line. See also caption to jgc_26_210. (Photographer: Helen Glass)
