CLAREMONT PLACE

Claremont Place (historic street)

James Gray: Ebenezer Baptist Chapel in 1960. It had five years more life left, being demolished in 1965. jgc_27_034

2018: Gray’s photograph [labelled ‘Carlton Row’] actually shows Claremont Place. The Ebenezer Chapel was on Richmond Street (now Richmond Parade) and Carlton Row had been demolished by 1935.

This updated image shows where the original chapel once stood; a new chapel now exists on the ground floor of a small block occupying what would have been the northern end of Claremont Row. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

James Gray: The reverse view of the previous photograph showing the site cleared of the seven prefabricated houses shown in a previous photograph. jgc_27_035

2018: The original photograph is of Claremont Row. Carlton Row had been demolished by 1935. This shows where Claremont Row stood before being demolished to make way for redevelopment. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

1956

James Gray: Although the slums of Claremont Row were swept away in 1935, the adjoining streets lingered on for another generation. On the left is Claremont Place looking north to Dinapore Street, on November 21st 1956. This stood about 50 yards east of the site of Claremont Row. It was demolished, along with Claremont Street, in 1959, as part of the Albion Hill Richmond Street redevelopment scheme. jgc_27_036
