CHELTENHAM PLACE

James Gray: Looking north from North Road, in 1897, with the horse vans standing outside Ellis & Beal’s Mineral Water Manufactory, at Nos. 1&2. The west side of this little street has hardly changed in its life of about 130 years. 1&2 are now occupied as a garage for the General Post Office vehicles. jgc_30_067

2018: Nos 1 and 2 Cheltenham Place are now two modern houses  (c2005) which blend in well with the original 1840s two-storey cottages on the west site of the street, each with a small walled front garden. By 1899, Ellis & Beal had moved their mineral water business to 36a Cheltenham Place, now the premises of the Colourfast print shop, and for much of the twentieth century garages occupied the original site at Nos 1 and 2. (Photographer: Lyn Turpin)
