MARINE PARADE

Charlotte Street

Neighbourhood:
Kemptown
1890s
2020

James Gray: A much later photograph [than jgc_06_042 of Marine Parade], which could date from the 1890s or even the 1900s. Whatever its age, it gives a very clear picture of 70 Marine Parade, after its complete reconstruction, or more probably rebuilding. This most likely took place during the late 1870s or in 1880. Also seen is the entrance to Charlotte Street. jgc_06_043

2020: The red-brick Beacon House on the eastern corner of Charlotte Street and Marine Parade lives on as The Lanes Hotel. The figure in the white tuxedo on the first floor balcony is actually a rather disconcerting cutout. (Photographer: David Sears)
