CHANNEL VIEW ROAD, WOODINGDEAN

Channel View Road

Neighbourhood:
Woodingdean
1931
2019

James Gray: The plot of land, measuring 40’ x 140’, seemingly in the heart of the country, but, in fact, not far from Warren Road. Date 7 August 1931. The first houses were built in Channel View Road, during 1929. jgc_33_086

2019: Today the whole estate is fully developed from the Drove Way down to Warren Road. This is a typical view of housing in Channel View Road. Together with Seaview Road, it was one of the earliest streets in the estate to be developed. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

1933
2019

James Gray: The bungalow, Highlands, 33 Channel View Road, built on this plot during the following year. Date: 15 June 1933. jgc_33_087

2019: There is no longer a bungalow on the site and the new house that replaced it is well concealed behind high hedges. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

1930
2019

James Gray: Four photographs [jgc_33_088, 089,  090 and 091] of Channel View Road. They are said to date from 1930 but I have no proof of this. In view of the state of the road and the standpipe (in the next view) for supplying water, this could well be and there were a few houses in this road in 1930. I think they are of different years.  Several houses were built by Mr AC Tomsett, who himself lived in the road for many years. jgc_33_088

2019: A biography of Mr Tomsett shows that he lived at 29 Channel View Road for a while and this and the identical house next door are still there. High hedges and parked cars made it impossible to get such a good view as in the original photograph. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

James Gray: See caption for jgc_33_088 above. jgc_33_090

2019: Given the style of building this is certainly either 29 or 27 Channel View Road.  The latter is shown here. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

James Gray: See caption for jgc_33_088 above. jgc_33_091

2019:  The house in the original photograph is not numbered and therefore difficult to identify.  This one seems to be similar but it is possible that the original building is long gone. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)
