CARLTON HILL

James Gray: Taken on July 10, 1979. The boarded-up house was for many years St John’s Church Vicarage but, when the last vicar left in 1978, it remained empty. After being derelict for several years, the building was taken over by American Express, whose main premises are in rear, and completely renovated in 1985. It is still there. jgc_24_065

2019: The block of flats to the right (east) of the vicarage are part of the American Express complex. Amex House, seen in the background of the 1979 image, was demolished in 2017. (Photographer: Ruthie Martin)

James Gray: A few yards further down Carlton Hill [from the previous photograph] is this very narrow bottleneck which is in distinct contrast to the width of the rest of this busy street. It is still just as narrow. jgc_24_066

2019: No comment. (Photogapher: Ruthie Martin)

James Gray: Two photographs of this old school, for long a landmark in this dingy neighbourhood. St Johns Church, further up Carlton Hill, was consecrated in January, 1840, and the school opened soon afterwards. It was to some extent replaced by the modern, present-day, St Johns School, which opened, on the other side of the road, in October, 1914, but for many years afterwards it remained in use for scholastic purposes. Demolished – 1980. Thinking that the building was ripe for removal, I had this photograph taken on March 3rd, 1961. Eighteen years later, the old building still stood when the following photograph was taken on June 10th, 1979. Note the growth of trees during the intervening years. jgc_24_136 and 137

Additional information:  This building was used as studios for the School of Architecture in the early 1970s.
