James Gray: In this photograph is the rear of 215 Kingsway or as it was first called, Victory House. This was built in 1897 so I do not know which Victory it was to commemorate. Later it was to become the Compton Court Hotel and finally it was converted to flats. It was said to have cost £8000 when first built.

After having been empty for some years it was sold with three adjoining houses and other buildings in Langdale and Carlisle Roads in one lot, the intention being that the whole site should be redeveloped with blocks of flats. jgc_15_057

2018: The house on the corner of Kingsway and Carlisle Road (west side) is no longer there, replaced by Channings block of flats. (Photographer: Susan Nicholls)

James Gray: The building seen in this view was just around the corner in Carlisle Road, at the rear of Victory House. jgc_15_061

2018: The building is no longer there. Neither is Victory House, which has been replaced by a block of flats, Channings. Victory House was built in 1897 and later became the Compton Court Hotel before the whole block was redeveloped into flats.  (Photographer: Susan Nicholls)
