BRUNSWICK ROW

Brunswick Row

Neighbourhood:
London Road
1954
2018

James Gray: Looking west from Ditchling Road to London Road. This narrow passage, which dates from the 1830s, consisted of 5 houses on each side, but several have been removed in recent years under slum clearance schemes. This photograph was taken on 20 June 1954. jgc_10a_026

2018: New buildings at the corners of London Road and Brunswick Row somewhat alter the profile of the passage. The original text mentions five houses on each side, some of which may have been pulled down during slum clearance. At the east end of the passage, seven of the ten cottages still exist, some entirely flint, others flint and render. Some may have been extended into the spaces once occupied by the missing cottages.
