CRESCENT HOUSE, MARINE PARADE

Bristol Road

Neighbourhood:
Eastern Brighton

James Gray: Three photographs [jgc_22_144, 145 and 146] of the Crescent Convalescent Home during the period 1906-1924. I do not know when it was built but it is mentioned in directories of the 1840s. It was then a private school but became a convalescent home in the 1880s. The large garden extended back to Bristol Road and in recent years the address has been 11 Bristol Road. Additional Information: Post card to Mrs Poole 41 Manchuria Road, Clapham Common, London SW11, from Mrs Glandille who was convalescing after an operation in the Home in 1924. jgc_22_144

James Gray: After the 1939-45 War it became a Polish Rehabilitation Centre and it is now the Jewish Home for the Aged. Additional Information: Postcard to Mrs E Partridge, 16 Winkfield Road, Woodgreen, N. from Vic. 20 August 1906. jgc_22_146

2019: View south from Bristol Road at the junction with St George’s Road. The gardens of the former Crescent House, along with St Anne’s Church in Burlington Street, were demolished in the 1980s and replaced by flats and sheltered housing but the small shop – complete with false façade – and the houses on the right of Gray’s image remain. (Photographer: Jayne Paulin)

James Gray: A view of the front façade. Additional Information: Postcard to Miss Rosie Borall, 14 West Place, The Common, Winchelsea, from her Mother who was convalescing at the home. 1907. jgc_22_145

2019: The Crescent House convalescent home was demolished in the 1980s and replaced by flats and sheltered housing. The spire of St Anne’s Church in Burlington Street appears to the right of the James Gray image. The church (demolished in 1986) can be seen more clearly in jgc_22_144 and 146 above. (Photographer: Jayne Paulin)
