LONDON ROAD, PATCHAM

Braypool Lane

Neighbourhood:
Patcham
c 1930
2020

James Gray: A view of this, now, extremely busy road as it was about sixty years ago. The area is between the Pylons and the Patcham crossroads. The exact year is not known but it is most likely the late 1920s or early 1930s. Most of these dwellings may have been built before 1928 when this area became incorporated with Brighton. The gabled double fronted house remains but most of the others have gone, removed during 1937-8 when Brighton Corporation levelled the sloping ground and laid out the present Braypool recreation ground. jgc_35_095

2019: All the houses to the north (left) of the gabled double fronted house mentioned by James Gray have now vanished and the area is now Braypool sports ground. The house itself remains as the core building of the RSPCA animal shelter, just visible through the trees. Some additional and newer houses have been built along Braypool Lane, the first traces of which appear in the 1930s photo running from left to right of the image. (Photographer: Chris Nichols)

James Gray: Four photographs of the period 1900-1910. There is now no trace of the farmhouse at Standean, the site being just a field but the adjoining farm buildings are there and mark the spot. The two cottages were some 400 yards distant at Upper Standean and traces of the flint walls and door thresholds were still there in 1967. jgc_35_196, 197, 198, 199 and 200
