BOROUGH STREET

Borough Street

Neighbourhood:
Western Road area
1860
2018

James Gray: The east side of this residential street, showing the recently opened St Stephens Church of England School – now occupied as a Timber Merchants Yard. It is interesting to note that two adjoining buildings were small public houses. At No. 38 was the Borough Arms tavern, while next door at No. 40 was the Swan Tavern. Both can be seen – far left. A recent print from a waxed paper negative. (Photographer: Philippe Garnier) jgc_26_183

2018: Very little of the former school is recognisable in the modern image apart from the fact that the walls are still flint. The roof line has been levelled off, the lancet windows replaced with large, square and inappropriate apertures. The building is now a block of flats called St Stephen’s House and, despite the architectural vandalism committed on it, it has Grade II listed status. (Photographer: Tony Bailey)
