BERNARD ROAD

Bernard Road

Neighbourhood:
Hanover/Elm Grove
1962
2018

James Gray: Photographed 7 October 1962. The building seen appears to be of recent origin, probably erected after the 1939/45 War. Certainly in all previous street directories there has been a significant gap between Nos 25 and 37 Bernard Road. The building at the rear, in Brading Road, was for many years the Model Laundry so the then open space behind the long flint wall may have been used as a drying ground. In more recent years the Brading Road premises housed the Homemade Bakery. When I was last in Bernard Road, in 1990 the building was still there. jgc_27_118

2018:  The building shown in the original photograph has now been replaced by a short row of fairly new terraced houses and flats for which planning permission was granted in March 2000. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)
