BEACONSFIELD ROAD.

Beaconsfield Road

Neighbourhood:
Preston Park and Village
1930s
2018

James Gray: A very early morning photograph, looking south in Beaconsfield Road and showing a steam train crossing the viaduct. The passing train may have been the reason for the apparently hurried snapshot. The style of milk-cart and the tramlines suggest that this is a 1930s photograph. jgc_20_080

2018: The trains have been electrified, the blue building in the left foreground now obscures part of the viaduct, but little else has changed.
(It is unlikely that the James Gray image was taken in the early morning; the  shadows are stretching due north, which suggests it is probably midday.) (Photographer: Max Page)

James Gray: The butcher’s shop of Benford & Co. at 90 Beaconsfield Road, in 1910 or thereabouts. The business still carries on at this address under the same name today (1983). There has been a butcher’s shop here for almost a century, the first one being opened in the 1880s. jgc _20_087

2019: Benford & Co butcher’s shop has now been replaced by Kamsons Pharmacy. The wall of 92 Beaconsfield Road has been demolished and the side garden of No 92 and the rear of No 90 have been turned into a small car park. (Photographer: Jane Jordan)
