HOLLINGBURY VALLEY

Barnett Road

Neighbourhood:
Hollingbury
1925
2019

James Gray: The view from Barnett Road across the valley in 1925. The wall in the foreground is the side wall of the present 45, Hollingbury Place. Most of this land formed part of Harrington farm and it was broken up for building plots in the 1920s. Beyond the trees (now covered by Hertford Road School) are the houses in Hollingdean Terrace, the low building with the chimney near the roof edge being the present 120. In the far distance are houses in Hollingbury Park Avenue. Most of Stanmer Park Road and the whole of Stanmer Villas had yet to be built. jgc_20_111

2019: Standing at the same spot on the corner of Barnett Road and Hollingbury Place almost 100 years later. Looking towards the back-garden perimeter of 45 Hollingbury Place, a fence has now replaced the wall and the distant views are obscured by the housing built to create Barnett Road. Pike’s Directory indicates that this was completed by 1927. (Photographer: Jane Jordan)
