WEST BLATCHINGTON

Pre 1900
2019

James Gray: In this small photograph can be seen the distant Three-Cornered Copse. No information as to period, but probably pre 1900. jgc_036_032

2019: From the two horses pre-1900 to around 60 horsepower in the red Ford Ka pictured in March 2019 at the top of Amberley Drive. Taken from the junction with Hangleton Way, this is the view across Toads Hole Valley today. The photographer is looking north-east, with the Three Cornered Copse in the distance. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)

1894
2019

James Gray: In the tiny photograph ewes and lambs are seen penned in a meadow in the valley north of Toads Hole Road. It is dated on the back 23 March 1894. On the right skyline is a glimpse of the Three-Cornered Copse. jgc_36_125

2019: The 1894 location cannot be reached today, due to the heavy undergrowth and trees in Toads Hole Valley. This modern view looks north-east from the junction of Hangleton Way and Amberley Drive.

In the background, above the black Mercedes, is the A27 Brighton bypass, with the Hove slip road leading off to the left. On the right skyline, above Toads Hole Valley, are the trees at the top of the Three Cornered Copse. Behind the hedge on the left is the entrance to West Blatchington Primary and Nursery School. (Photographer: Alan Hobden)
