DOWNLAND BRIGHTON

James Gray: Sheep and cattle grazing on the Downs. When I acquired these photographs [see also jgc_33_105 below] I was told that they were taken between Woodingdean and Rottingdean early in the 1920s. If this was so the fields may now well be covered with houses, rendering positive identification impossible. jgc_33_104

2019: Despite James Gray’s pessimism quite large areas south and east of Woodingdean remain free of development, partly because in 1970 3,000 people from Woodingdean signed a petition to Save The Valley in order to stop development in the Ovingdean valley. Even today substantial areas east of Wilson Avenue to Falmer Road and south and east of Cowley Drive remain free of building. Sheep grazing, however, is now largely confined to the area east of Cowley Drive though the sheep seen in the 2019 image were photographed down in the valley. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)
