James Gray: No caption is necessary for this photograph taken at Lewes Road Station in 1909. I have not taken the trouble to refer to old papers to see where the outing was going when the party arrived at Brighton Station. One wonders though how many of the lads and young men survived the carnage of the coming World War. jgc_28_026

2018: Lewes Road station has long gone. It was opened in 1873 as part of the Kemptown railway line. Despite its high operating costs it never carried many passengers and was closed to passengers in 1933 and the platform buildings used as a pickle factory until they were demolished in the 1950s. The line remained open to transport goods only until being closed completely in June 1971. The station site has now been completely obliterated by the creation of the Centenary trading estate in 1986. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)

James Gray: This view shows the offices of Arthur H. Cox & Co. Ltd. in D’Aubigny Road, shortly before the business was closed down in Brighton and moved to another part of the country. The house is the last one in Richmond Road. jgc_28_065

2018: The building (now known as Richmond House) was substantially rebuilt after Cox & Co moved out and is now a housing block. (Photographer: Ron Fitton)
