James Gray: Miramichi, built in the 1860s, with its entrance drive running up from London Road. It still stands (1978), but empty, in Cedars Gardens. Photographed – 4 July 1971. jgc_34_021
2019: “Cedars Gardens (identified as Cedars Avenue on the OS 1938 revision) was laid out on the southern half of the two-acre grounds by 1932, with Miramichi standing on the north side of the new road, although it seems to have lost its name then. It was demolished in the early 1980s. The house and the adjacent former East Sussex County House Association for the Aged home were replaced by The Cedars sheltered housing development. The Miramichi lodge still bisects the entrance to Cedars Gardens.” (brightonhistory.org.uk/
James Gray: This old house [Miramichi] originally stood, on its own, in a large area of land stretching back from London Road, Withdean to Station Road, guarded only by a lodge abutting on London Road, which is still there. It remained in isolation with extensive grounds for about 60 years approached by a private roadway. About 1932 development began and new houses were built on both sides of a public road named Cedars Gardens. For a time the house stayed in private occupation after which it was empty until becoming an Old People’s Home. At the time its name was changed to The Cedars. These photographs were taken in the 1970s and show the rear of the house and gardens and the frontage facing south. jgc_34_023
