HANGLETON FARM

Hangleton Link Road

Neighbourhood:
Portslade and Southwick
1890
2019

James Gray: These photographs [jgc_37_001 and 002], taken on 9 June 1890, show a part of the extensive Hangleton Farm which in those days extended from the church down to the Old Shoreham Road, and westwards to the ridge which is now Foredown Drive, Portslade. The land in the foreground is now part of the West Hove Golf Course. On the ridge can be seen a glimpse of Hangleton Mill, while the long hedge is there to this day. jgc_37_001

2019: The farmland became the old West Hove golf course and when the Brighton bypass was opened, the course was relocated north of it.

A link road was built through the valley from the bypass to join with the Old Shoreham Road. North of Hangleton Lane, the remainder of the course became a small nine hole course. South of Hangleton Lane, moving southwards, the top half has reverted to nature. Below that is a Sainsburys supermarket and a small sports field is adjacent to the Old Shoreham Road. Fortunately the link road is hidden by trees and in the photo, only a glimpse of the supermarket roof is visible. The land beyond the hedge is now suburban housing. (Photographer: Mark Stephenson)
