James Gray: Hangleton and the coast from Foredown Hill. Taken on 26 May 1939. jgc_37_047

2019: This photograph taken from Foredown Hill shows how the bypass dominates the scene. Housing in Hangleton and Portslade has covered much of Benfield Valley. It also shows how wooded the valley has become where it has not been built over. (Photographer: Mark Stephenson)

James Gray: This photograph of “COUNTRY LANE AT PORTSLADE” is dated for us by the photographer as 25 April 1918. The location is not known to me, but I am told by old residents that it was the Drove Road, a completely rural road 60 years ago. jgc_38_017

2018: The Drove Road was so named as it was the road by which livestock was driven from Southwick and the west, past the north side of Portslade old village, over the hill toward Hangleton, and finally to the Brighton abattoir. Judging by the topography, the picture appears to have been taken from where Drove Road now becomes Foredown Road. (Photographer: Jeremy Knight)
