BEECHWOOD AND LEAHURST

Curwen Place

Neighbourhood:
Withdean
1950s
2019

James Gray: Photographs of the two adjoining mansions, not long before their demolition. jgc_34_003

2019: The old photo appears to be looking at the side and back of Leahurst from the gardens behind Beechwood.

The new photo is taken in the vicinity of the old photo and the only reference is that the old wall that divided the estates of Leahurst and Beechwood remains. It appears that the height of the wall has been lowered. The apartment block to the right, with stone coloured bricks, is Cedarwood, that is approximately on the spot where the old Beechwood house stood. (Photographer: Bill Kocher)

James Gray: This photograph shows the immediate rear of Beechwood. jgc_34_005

2019: The 2019 photograph was taken from a spot to the left of the original, as an apartment block sits where the image was taken.

A block called Cedarwood is approximately on the spot where Beechwood was situated and is the one behind Cherrywood in the foreground. The area has been transformed out of all recognition. (Photographer: Bill Kocher)
