James Gray: A narrow street of only eleven houses, which extended from Upper Russell Street to Western Road. It was probably built in the 1820s, after Russell Square and Clarence Square, and contained one house of distinction, Milton House. jgc_29_211

 James Gray: You will look in vain for these houses now. As part of the 11½ acre West Street site, they were swept away in December 1964, just a few days after this photograph was taken on the 6th of that month. The house shown was 10 Clarence Street, which was separated from 48 Clarence Square by an enclosed garden. jgc_29_212

2018: The baker’s shop seen in jgc_29_211 was at 3 Russell Square. Looking uphill (north), the white house on the left (west) in the middle distance in the same image is the house which features in jgc_ 29_212 and 228. In the far distance on the left is the Prince of Wales pub and the buildings closing the perspective are those on the north side of Western Road. To the right (east) in the foreground of jgc_29_211 is the start of Upper Russell Street (see also jgc_29_170 on the Upper Russell Road (2) page).
