THE GARDENER’S ARMS

Islingword Road

Neighbourhood:
Hanover/Elm Grove
Unknown
2018

James Gray: This beerhouse was at 40 Islingword Road, from 1870 until being closed on 10 April 1948, when the licence was surrendered. It is hard to say when it was built, though probably, this was in the 1850s. It was a shop before becoming a beerhouse and it reverted to this use when delicenced. jgc_27_007

2018: Number 40 is now a private dwelling. The upstairs window has been remodelled, the second door removed, and the rainwater downpipe repositioned. The rest of the building and its neighbours are otherwise largely unchanged. (Photographer: Kevin Wilsher)

James Gray: The bottom of the south side of this road. This shows the gap where No. 142 used to stand. The break in the houses was obviously to provide access to the building now occupied by the Co-operative Dairy. jgc_27_055

2018: The buildings are still standing, though the shop has now closed. (Photographer: Simon Cooper)

James Gray: On the corner of Islingword Road at the bottom of Elm Grove. jgc_27_105

2018: Little has changed although subsequent plant growth makes this picture difficult to capture. (Photographer: Simon Cooper)
