A STROLL AROUND NORTH LAINE AREA – QUEENS GARDENS

Kemp Street

Neighbourhood:
North Laine
1958/61
2019

James Gray: Dates of these photographs are not known, but it is thought that all were taken in the period 1958/61, a view that is supported by the almost complete absence of motor vehicles in the residential streets. Nos. 3-5 (Tivoli Laundry) and 6 are on west side looking towards Trafalgar Street. jgc_25_185

2019: James Gray mistook Queen’s Gardens for Kemp Street, a similar North Laine street of terraced houses. Tivoli Laundry’s head office was in Crescent Road, with receiving offices in Southover Street and at 5 Kemp Street. Today in Kemp Street, parked cars are more in evidence but so are bicycles. The view in the 2019 photograph shows houses on the east side of Kemp Street, near the junction with Gloucester Road and looking towards Trafalgar Street. All the houses in view have had changes made to their windows, Nos 5 and 6 have lost their arched doorways, and No 5 is no longer a commercial building. (Photographer: Lyn Turpin)
